The reframe

Hereโ€™s whatโ€™s actually happening.

You perform at a high level. You navigate spaces that werenโ€™t built with you in mind.

You carry things that donโ€™t show up on a job description: adjusting how you show up depending on whoโ€™s in the room, being the only one who represents your group in it, staying alert in ways that never fully switch off, and doing labor nobody sees or names.

None of that is free. It has a physiological cost, and that cost has to land somewhere in your body.

We call that cost the Success Tax. Not because itโ€™s financial. Because itโ€™s the toll that chronic stress exposure takes on your system when the exposure itself never gets acknowledged as stress. Itโ€™s tax in the sense of a levy, and the impact it has on your body.

Most people carrying this cost have been told itโ€™s โ€œjust stress,โ€ โ€œjust burnout,โ€ or โ€œjust what happens at this level.โ€ That framing doesnโ€™t help you, because it doesnโ€™t tell you where the cost is concentrating in your body.

You canโ€™t address what you canโ€™t locate.
Whatโ€™s driving it

Five sources.
One unseen cost.

The Success Tax isnโ€™t one kind of pressure. Itโ€™s the accumulated effort of navigating expectations, perception, and responsibility that others may never have to name.

01

Excellence Pressure

The internal load of having to be exceptional to be seen as competent.

02

Code-Switching

Adjusting how you speak, move, or present depending on whoโ€™s watching.

03

Representation Burden

Carrying the weight of being โ€œthe oneโ€ in a room.

04

Vigilance Fatigue

The cost of staying alert to how youโ€™re being perceived.

05

Invisible Labor

The effort that goes into managing all of the above, which nobody else has to account for.

These donโ€™t distribute evenly through your body. They tend to concentrate in one of four layers. This assessment tells you which one.

Where the cost lands

The four layers.

Not four boxes to squeeze yourself into. Four ways your system may be registering the load.

01 / 04

Physiological Layer

Your bodyโ€™s signal system is being overridden. Hunger, fatigue, and pain get pushed past during high-pressure periods and only register once theyโ€™re loud.

Letโ€™s verify whether this is your primary layer: this usually shows up as symptoms that seem to come out of nowhere, digestive changes, disrupted sleep, or shifts in your hormonal cycle that donโ€™t have an obvious cause.

02 / 04

Cognitive Layer

Your processing capacity is running with less headroom than it should. The mental load of maintaining performance while managing how youโ€™re perceived draws from the same bandwidth you need for decisions and creative thinking.

This usually shows up as brain fog, decision fatigue over small choices, and effort that stops producing the results it used to.

03 / 04

Relational Layer

Your capacity for connection is absorbing the cost. Code-switching, managing other peopleโ€™s comfort, and carrying invisible labor wear down the relationships and boundaries that are supposed to support you.

This usually shows up as feeling isolated even when youโ€™re surrounded by people, friction in relationships that matter to you, and difficulty letting support in even when itโ€™s offered.

04 / 04

Systemic Layer

More than one system is registering the load at once. Body, cognition, and relationships are all absorbing cost simultaneously, which is why a single fix tends not to hold.

This usually shows up as the sense that โ€œnothing works,โ€ symptoms that move between body, mind, and relationships, and a string of wellness strategies that each helped a little and then stopped.

A question of fit

Does this sound familiar?

You donโ€™t have to prove your experience to start paying attention to it. But it helps to know whether this is the right kind of tool for you.

This is a fit if...

  • Youโ€™re a high-achieving Black, Indigenous, or woman of color navigating predominantly white professional spaces.
  • You recognize Excellence Pressure, Code-Switching, Representation Burden, Vigilance Fatigue, or Invisible Labor in your experience.
  • You have symptoms that seem unconnected but suspect theyโ€™re related.
  • You want a clinical read rather than another generic wellness quiz.

It may not be a fit if...

  • None of the patterns above are ones you recognize in yourself.
  • Youโ€™re looking for a single quick fix rather than an accurate picture of whatโ€™s happening.

You donโ€™t need a deadline to pay attention.

You donโ€™t need a deadline to justify paying attention to your own signals. The reason to take this now isnโ€™t that a crisis is a fixed number of months away. Itโ€™s that every month spent addressing symptoms without knowing where theyโ€™re concentrating is a month of trial and error you donโ€™t have to keep running. Locating the pattern doesnโ€™t cost you anything but ten minutes, and it changes what you try next from a guess into a decision.

Portrait of Danielle Izaak-Lewis
The person behind the assessment

I built the tool I needed.

I built this assessment because I lived this pattern before I was clinically trained to name it. I carried Excellence Pressure, Code-Switching, Representation Burden, Vigilance Fatigue, and Invisible Labor in spaces that praised what I achieved and never asked what it cost me.

My body kept registering it even when I wasnโ€™t listening: symptoms my doctor called normal for someone my age, brain fog that made me question my own competence, and isolation even while surrounded by people who valued me.

What changed things wasnโ€™t treating each symptom as its own problem. It was mapping where the cost was actually landing, then building a response for that specific layer instead of a generic one. Thatโ€™s the tool I built here. Itโ€™s the one I needed when I was achieving and depleted at the same time, and I didnโ€™t yet know where the damage was concentrating.

Your body has been registering this the whole time. This assessment is a way to actually read what itโ€™s been telling you.

Good questions

Common questions about the assessment.

How is this different from a generic stress assessment?

Most stress assessments tell you how stressed you are. This one looks at where the cost of specific high-achievement pressures may be concentrating in your system. You receive a plain-language layer read and a next step, rather than a generic wellness list.

How long does the assessment take?

There are 10 questions, and answering them takes about 10 minutes. Youโ€™ll receive your layer read within 48 hours.

What if I score in multiple layers?

That can happen. These experiences do not always stay in one part of life. The free assessment helps locate the primary pattern showing up right now; the deeper session is where your specific sources and their connections can be mapped in more detail.

Is this clinically valid?

The assessment is framework-informed and designed to help you recognize a pattern. It is not a medical diagnosis and does not replace care from your healthcare provider. The free read locates a pattern; the Deep Dive Clinical Strategy Session explores the mechanism and builds a personalized response.

What happens after I get my results?

You receive a plain-language read on your layer and a clear next step. What you do after that is entirely your call. If you want a more specific map of what is driving the pattern for you, the $500 Deep Dive Clinical Strategy Session is an optional next step.

Will you sell my information?

Your answers are provided for your assessment read, not for a public result. You can review the privacy information on the assessment page before sharing your responses.
