The Three States Your Nervous System Lives In

There is a reason the same meal feels completely different depending on the day.

Same food. Same portion. Same person sitting down to eat. And yet some days you finish and feel satisfied, and other days you eat the whole plate and immediately want more, or eat half and feel vaguely sick, or stand over the kitchen counter not hungry but reaching anyway.

This is not a consistency problem. It is a state problem.

In the 1990s, Dr. Stephen Porges mapped three distinct states in the autonomic nervous system. Each state produces a different physiological environment in the body, different hormonal outputs, different blood flow patterns, different levels of digestive function. And each state produces a different eating experience, not because your preferences changed, but because the physical conditions for digestion, appetite, and satiety are different in each one.

Understanding these three states is the foundation for understanding why eating feels so hard some days and completely natural on others. Not because you have more discipline on the good days. Because your nervous system is in a different place.


State One: Ventral Vagal. The one your body was built for.

When your ventral vagal complex is active, your parasympathetic nervous system runs its full digestive protocol. Blood flows to your gut. Gastric acid and digestive enzymes release on schedule. Gut motility keeps food moving at the right pace. Satiety hormones including cholecystokinin, leptin, and GLP-1 interact with vagal pathways at full sensitivity.

In this state, hunger registers accurately. Fullness registers accurately. You can sit down with food, eat it, taste it, and stop when the signal comes. This is not a personality trait you either have or do not have. It is a physiological condition. The body is operating in the environment it was designed for.


State Two: Sympathetic Activation. The state most high-achieving women spend the majority of their day in.

When the sympathetic nervous system takes over, the body reads the environment as threatening and responds accordingly. Blood supply redistributes away from digestive organs toward skeletal muscle. Gastric acid secretion drops. Gut motility slows. The rest-and-digest protocol gets suspended because the body is preparing for movement, not a meal.

Appetite does one of two things here. It either disappears entirely, which is why you sometimes forget to eat on a high-stress day, or it becomes obsessive and non-hunger-based. You think about food constantly but have no real appetite when you sit down with it. Both patterns come from the same source: the sympathetic state disrupting the normal hunger-satiety signal cycle.

The craving for crunchy, high-resistance foods during stress is not random. Jaw tension during sympathetic arousal is measurable. The body reaches for textures that match the physical tension it is already carrying.

One of the consistent patterns in this practice: women presenting with stress awareness scores at crisis-level only. They do not register that the sympathetic system is running until they are already at an eight or nine out of ten. By that point, the eating behavior has been running on stress physiology for hours, sometimes for a full day, without any conscious awareness that the state had changed.

These are the women who describe starting wellness routines strong, then burning out and abandoning them, who have tried nutrition, movement, and stress management and report that nothing sticks. State Three: Dorsal Vagal Shutdown. The one that looks like laziness but is not.

The dorsal vagal state is the most primitive branch of the autonomic nervous system. When the nervous system registers threat as inescapable and prolonged, this system initiates a shutdown response. Metabolic rate slows. Emotional range narrows. The body goes quiet in a way that looks like stillness but is actually conservation.

In this state, appetite regulation breaks down in a specific direction. Cravings shift toward soft, creamy, low-resistance comfort foods. Eating happens not from hunger but from a need to generate sensation when emotional numbing has reduced input from other sources. You are not eating because you are hungry. You are eating because you need to feel something.

Gut symptoms that look like irritable bowel syndrome are common in this state, including bloating, irregular motility, and abdominal discomfort. The origin is not gastrointestinal pathology. The origin is the gut operating inside a shutdown nervous system.

One clinical pattern that confirms this: a client reporting a food-energy awareness score of 1 out of 10, describing every meal as physiological guesswork, with complete interoceptive disconnection. Not mild difficulty reading hunger cues. Complete absence of reliable signal. Why this matters more than your meal plan.

These three states do not respond to nutrition strategy. You cannot portion-control your way out of sympathetic dominance. You cannot eat cleaner to resolve dorsal shutdown. The eating behavior is downstream of the state. The state is where the work begins.

Before you can accurately read your hunger, your body needs to be in a physiological condition where hunger signals transmit clearly and satiety signals register on arrival.
