The Blind Spot That’s Sabotaging You: You Are the Cause of Your Dis-ease
Jul 06, 2026
When friction shows up in your life around food, work, movement, or wellness, your first instinct might be to try harder. But what if the real problem isn’t your effort? What if it’s the unquestioned beliefs driving your choices?
Understanding Whole-Person Wellness and Dis-ease.
When I say “you are the cause of your dis-ease,” I need you to hear me clearly: I’m not talking about blame. I’m talking about the patterns, behaviors, and beliefs operating beneath your conscious awareness. The ones infiltrating how you live and what you allow to control your choices.
Dis-ease shows up when something in your life creates chronic friction. It appears across the different dimensions of whole-person wellness: physical health, emotional balance, financial security, relational connection, spiritual alignment, and how you use your time and energy.
The beliefs you hold in one area don’t stay contained. They ripple through everything else. And when those beliefs don’t actually align with your values, desires, or what your body needs to thrive, they create the conditions for dis-ease to take root.
How Unquestioned Beliefs Create Chronic Stress
Let me give you a concrete example: financial wellness and the 9-to-5 construct.
Many of us believe that a traditional W-2 job (complete with set hours, commute time, and employer-provided benefits) is the primary, or only, way to achieve financial security. This belief feels like fact because it’s been reinforced across generations. You accept a job offer, sign an agreement, and commit to working a certain number of hours. Your Monday through Friday is now dictated for you.
If you’re someone who wants to build a life that isn’t confined to a predetermined schedule prior to 'set retirement age', this arrangement will feel restraining. But instead of questioning the belief that a 9-to-5 is the only path to financial wellness, you might dismiss the friction: “It’s not that bad. Everyone does this. You’ll get through it.”
Your body, however, doesn’t dismiss it. Your nervous system registers the daily commute to a job you don’t enjoy, working with people you don’t connect with, spending the majority of your waking hours in a structure that feels misaligned with your desires. This becomes chronic stress. Not because of a single traumatic event, but because of sustained misalignment between what you believe you must do and what actually serves your wellbeing.
The Same Pattern Shows Up Around Food and Movement
This dynamic isn’t limited to work. It plays out identically with how you eat and move your body.
With food: You might believe that weight loss requires calorie restriction paired with regular gym sessions. So you try to fit your eating habits into this construct. Restricting portions, eliminating foods, forcing yourself to stay within rigid parameters. When you struggle to maintain this, you blame yourself for lacking discipline rather than questioning whether the belief itself serves you.
But what if your body doesn’t respond well to restriction? What if this approach triggers the exact metabolic protective mechanisms that make weight loss harder? The friction you’re experiencing isn’t a personal failure. It’s information that the belief you’re operating from doesn’t align with your biology.
With movement: Perhaps you believe the gym is the only legitimate way to exercise. But getting there consistently feels impossible, so you conclude you’re not committed enough. What if the belief is the problem? What if your body would thrive with different forms of movement? Walking, dancing, yoga, activities that feel joyful rather than obligatory.
When Your Body Registers Threat
Here’s what happens when you consistently operate from beliefs that don’t serve you.
Your body begins learning patterns. It understands how you show up in the spaces and places you inhabit. When something feels like a threat to your safety and wellbeing (even if you logically dismiss it as “not that bad”), your system shifts into what we call survival mode.
This survival response doesn’t require a car accident or physical danger. It activates from chronic, low-grade stressors: the job you dread, the eating rules you can’t sustain, the exercise regimen that feels punishing, the constant internal pressure to maintain constructs that don’t actually fit your life.
We’ve been conditioned to minimize these experiences. To not “make things bigger than they need to be.” To push through, adapt, keep going. But this learned behavior of lessening and dismissing doesn’t eliminate the stress response. It just teaches your body that survival is the ongoing state of operation.
The Cycle of Survival Mode
When your nervous system determines that you’re operating under chronic threat conditions, it doesn’t wait for your conscious permission to adapt. It begins making changes designed to help you survive:
Your energy gets redirected toward immediate survival rather than long-term thriving. Metabolic processes shift into conservation mode. Cognitive resources become limited to handling present demands. Physical symptoms emerge as your body attempts to signal that something needs to change.
You’re not thriving in this state. You’re surviving it. And the more you push forward without questioning the beliefs driving your choices, the more you reinforce to your system that survival is necessary. Other capacities get limited or shut down so you can continue existing within structures that keep you chronically stressed.
This is the cycle. This is how unexamined beliefs become the cause of your dis-ease.
The Thread That Unravels Everything
When friction appears in any single area of your whole-person wellness, it doesn’t stay isolated. That friction becomes a thread that gradually unravels and affects other areas over time.
The job that drains you impacts your energy for preparing nourishing meals. The restrictive eating pattern affects your sleep quality. The forced exercise routine you dread creates resistance to all movement. The financial stress from maintaining a lifestyle that doesn’t align with your values shows up as tension in your relationships.
None of these areas exist independently. They’re interconnected dimensions of your wellbeing, and stress in one domain inevitably bleeds into others.
The Invitation: Question Your Beliefs
So when you encounter friction, when something in your life consistently feels hard, resistant, or misaligned, the question isn’t “How do I push through this?” or “What’s wrong with me that I can’t make this work?”
The question is: “What belief am I holding that’s creating this friction?”
Ask yourself:
• Does this belief actually serve my wellbeing, or have I simply inherited it?
• Does it align with my values, desires, and the life I want to create?
• Is this friction information that something needs to change? Not about my effort, but about the construct itself.
With work: If the 9-to-5 structure creates persistent friction, question the belief that it’s the only path to financial security. That construct was learned, conditioned, passed down through generations. It’s not immutable truth.
With food: If restrictive eating creates constant struggle, question the belief that calorie deficits and food rules are the only path to health. Explore whether your body might respond better to different approaches that honor its actual needs.
With movement: If gym-based exercise feels like an obligation you can’t sustain, question the belief that it’s the only valid form of fitness. Consider whether your body might thrive with movement that feels like joy rather than duty.
You Are the Cause, and Therefore the Solution
When I say “you are the cause of your dis-ease,” I mean this: Not you as a person who’s failing, but the unquestioned beliefs, unchallenged patterns, and inherited constructs that you’re operating from without conscious examination.
These beliefs are shaping your daily choices. They’re influencing how you allocate your time and energy. They’re co-creating a life that may not actually align with what your heart desires or what your body needs to thrive.
The profound truth in this statement is also its liberation. If you are the cause through your unexamined beliefs, then you are also the solution through conscious questioning and realignment.
You have the power to examine the beliefs driving your choices. To challenge the constructs that create chronic friction. To choose alignment over adaptation. To build a life designed around your actual values rather than inherited assumptions.
This isn’t about doing more or trying harder. It’s about doing differently. From a foundation of beliefs that actually serve your whole-person wellness rather than undermine it.
Moving from Survival to Thriving
Your body doesn’t want to be in survival mode. It wants to thrive. But it can only shift out of protective mechanisms when the conditions that triggered them change.
Those conditions aren’t just external circumstances. They’re also the internal beliefs that determine how you interpret, respond to, and operate within those circumstances.
When you begin questioning the beliefs creating friction in your life, when you start making choices aligned with your actual values rather than inherited constructs, you send new signals to your nervous system. You communicate that thriving is possible. That safety is available. That alignment is achievable.
From that foundation, dis-ease begins to dissolve. Not because you forced it away, but because you removed the beliefs that were causing it in the first place.
Sister, the beliefs you don’t question will continue shaping your life by default. The ones you consciously examine and realign? Those become the foundation for true, sustainable thriving.
